1. Norwich was the UK’s first City of Refuge.
In 2006, Norwich became the United Kingdom’s first City of Refuge. The idea behind the UNESCO project was to provide persecuted foreign writers with a place for themselves and their families to stay, so as to uphold and campaign for the idea of freedom of speech.
2. The first woman to write a book in English was believed to be from Norwich.
Around 1393, Dame Julian of Norwich wrote Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love. It is thought that she was the first ever woman to write a book in English.
3. Norwich is the first English city to be named a City of Literature.
Keeping with the theme of literature, Norwich was the first English city to be named an international City of Literature. Norwich was awarded the title in 2012, and joined Edinburgh, Melbourne, Iowa City, Dublin, and Reykjavik.
4. Norwich is a rather isolated city.
Due to the fact that Norfolk is one of the only counties in the UK to not have any stretches of motorway running through it, Norwich is a rather isolated part of the country. In fact, before railway joined the city with London, it took less time to sail from Norwich to Amsterdam than it would to get to London by road.
5. Stephen Fry is a director of Norwich City FC.
National treasure Stephen Fry has had a long term affiliation with the city of Norwich, and is an avid fan of Norwich City FC. In 2010, he joined the team’s board of directors, and described the occasion as “one of the most exciting days of my life.”
