2. One of the most iconic Led Zeppelin songs was performed live for the first time in Belfast.
Led Zeppelin’s classic rock ballad Stairway to Heaven was performed live for the first time ever in the Ulster Hall in Belfast on the 5th March, 1971. Bassist John Paul Jones recalled fans at the show being rather bored by the performance!
3. An incredibly important life-saving device was invented in Belfast.
In 1965, Professor James Francis Pantridge and Dr John Geddis, two bright sparks from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, ingeniously used car batteries to alter the hospital’s defibrillator – creating the world’s first portable defibrillator in the process. This device has gone on to save countless lives around the world.
4. One of the world’s most infamous ships was built in Belfast.
Heard of the RMS Titanic? Thought so. This ship was the largest of its kind when it was launched in Belfast in 1911. Unfortunately, the Titanic didn’t last too long. As we all know it tragically sunk after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage.
5. The Chronicles of Narnia were born in Belfast.
C.S Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia, was born in Belfast in 1898. The first book of the series, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, was published in 1950.
