1. The world record for riding on a roller coaster was set in Blackpool.
In 2012, roller coaster enthusiast Richard Rodriguez set the world record for the most consecutive days spent on a roller coaster. Rodriguez spent an incredible 112 days on the Big One roller coaster.
2. A horse once turned on the Blackpool Illuminations!
You may know that every year, a famous celebrity is asked to turn on the Blackpool Illuminations, but did you know that they were turned on by a horse in 1977? Red Rum, the UK’s best-known race horse had the honour of turning on the lights that year. He also opened The Steeplechase roller coaster at Pleasure Beach in the same year!
3. Blackpool Tower was modelled on the Eiffel Tower.
Does Blackpool Tower look familiar to you? The Mayor of Blackpool was so impressed with Paris’ Eiffel Tower, he thought that Blackpool should have its own. The Blackpool Tower was built in 1894, and stands at 518 feet tall. In 1984, there was even a huge model of King Kong attached to its side!
4. Blackpool was the first municipality in the world to have electric street lighting.
In 1879, Blackpool became the world’s first ever municipality to gain electric street lighting. As can be seen from the annual Blackpool Illuminations, the city is still carrying on the tradition to this day!
5. You will never be short of things to do in Blackpool.
Amusement parks, Illuminations, Winter Gardens and water parks – Blackpool really does have it all when it comes to entertainment! The Arcade machines on Blackpool’s North Pier have a ridiculous number of coins fed into them every year – over 11 million! Edge to edge they would stretch 168 miles.
