Lara Croft, the star of the Tomb Raider video games and movie franchise is originally from Derby. Well, not in the sense that she was born there (she is a fictional character after all), but Core Design – a Derby based company – created her for the original 1996 videogame!
2. The world’s most secure carpark is in Derby.
The Bold Lane multi-story car park is one of the world’s safest locations, according to a study that was originally published in Focus, a science magazine. Other locations included on the list were Fort Knox, Area 51 and Airforce One!
3. The biggest ever bowl of popcorn was made in Derby.
In 1991, the UCI cinema at the Meteor Centre made the world’s largest ever bowl of popcorn. It took the team, made up of staff from the cinema, three days to complete the record, starting on the 23rd of August and finishing on the 26th.
4. Derby did not like the Sex Pistols.
Legendary punk-rockers the Sex Pistols weren’t always as popular as they are now. In fact, the notorious rockers were banned by Derby Council in 1976 from performing in the city because of their antisocial antics.
5. The UK’s first purpose built basketball arena was in Derby.
The now defunct British Basketball League team Derby Storm was the first basketball team in the UK to get their own purpose built basketball arena. It was called the Thunderdome, and was built in a converted factory.
