1. Thomas Cook organised the world’s first package tour in 1841.
Thomas Cook, a global travel company, first began providing package tours to residents of Leicester in 1841. The founder of the company organised a successful one-day excursion from Leicester to Loughborough and thus, began one of the most successful travel companies that exist today.
2. Leicester was in the Guinness Book of World Records.
In 1961, Leicester made its way into the Guinness book of World Records. Why? Leicester was home to the largest Tesco supermarket in Europe!
3. King Richard III was found under a Leicester car park.
In August 1485, King Richard III was the last king to be killed in battle. He was then buried by the Grey Friars Church. In 2012, a search began underneath a Leicester car park which unearthed the king’s skeletal remains. His casket then stayed in Leicester Cathedral for public viewing until he was reinterred on 26th March 2015.
4. Leicester is home to the biggest celebrations outside of India.
The biggest Diwali celebrations outside of India take place right in the heart of Leicester’s Asian community. Upwards of 35,000 people attend the event to celebrate the festival of light.
5. Britain’s first ever local radio station was launched in Leicester.
