1. The first ever police chase happened in Northampton.
In 1899, Sgt Hector Macleod became the first ever police officer in the world to apprehend a criminal after a car chase. The car chase destroyed a market square and a large pile of cardboard boxes, before ending in an explosion.
2. American president George Washington had family ties to Northampton
George Washington was the first President of the United States and one of the country’s founding fathers. He also had a great-great-great-great-great grandfather, Lawrence Washington, who became Mayor of Northampton in 1535.
3. The oldest man in the world is supposedly from Northampton.
Want to live a long life? Move to Northampton. John Bayles, a button maker from Northampton was said to have lived to the age of 130. Unfortunately, he died in 1706 – making it rather difficult to verify whether he actually did live to 130. If true though, he would become the oldest man in history by a margin of 14 years!
4. James Bond gets his shoes from Northampton.
Northampton is a town famous for its shoemaking industry. During the first and second world wars, Northampton cobblers provided the majority of boots for the British Armed forces. James Bond also wore shoes from the area in ‘Casino Royale’.
5. Doctor Who is from Northampton.
Matt Smith – the actor who played the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who – was born and raised in Northampton. Delia Derbyshire, the woman who wrote the original Doctor Who theme tune, spent her final years living in Northampton.
