Batman enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that Warner Bros chose Wollaton Hall – one of Nottingham’s most loved attractions - as the set of Wayne Manor in the Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, directed by the legendary Christopher Nolan.
2. An inventor of sorts.
Not only was HP sauce invented in Nottingham by FG Garton, Raleigh bikes, the VCR, tarmac, and MRI machines were also all invented or discovered in Nottingham. It is also the birthplace of Boots Pharmacy!
3. Who’s the biggest sheriff in town?
Nottingham has its own Sherriff – who would have thought? Historically, the sheriff brought criminals to justice and enforced law and order in Nottingham. Now, however, the position is ceremonial and is maintained for tourism purposes.
4. Nottingham is home to the world’s smallest public cinema.
With only 22 seats, Nottingham is home to the smallest public cinema in the world. Named Screen 22, the cinema was reopened on 8th September 2011 by Amy Gathercole. At the time of the reopening, she was only 24 – making her the youngest cinema owner in the UK.
5. Nottingham was not always known as such…
Nottingham was originally named Snottingham – no, we are not kidding! It was named after an Anglo-Saxon chief named Snot who settled here and made it his home. It then later became known as Nottingham – which do you prefer?
