1. Swindon’s twin city is Walt Disney World.
In 2009, Swindon emerged victorious from a competition between 24 other UK towns to become the twin city of Walt Disney World in Florida. Talk about a Mickey Mouse town!
2. Swindon has a number of ties to James Bond.
Two iconic Swindon buildings were used as film locations in two James Bond Films: the Spectrum Building in A View to a Kill, and the Motorola Building in The World is not Enough. Ian Fleming, James Bond’s creator, also owned property just outside of Swindon, and is also buried near his house there.
3. First UK town to offer free wifi.
Swindon made headlines a few years ago when it became the first town in the UK to offer wireless internet access to all of its residents for free. Seeing as the residents of Swindon use more internet data per capita than anywhere else in the country, this surely went down well with locals!
4. The artist who painted the Virgin mascot is from Swindon.
Chances are you have heard of Sir Richard Branson and his multi-billion pound company Virgin, but did you know that the man who created the Virgin Atlantic ‘Scarlet Lady’ mascot is from Swindon? Swindonian Ken White created the iconic mascot in 1984, and was a personal artist for Branson for many years.
5. Swindon is home to the first UK museum dedicated to the history of the computer.
The Museum of Computing was opened in Swindon in 2003, and was the first ever museum in the United Kingdom to dedicate itself to preserving and showcasing the history of computing.
